IMPORTANT NOTE:
With the release in EPEL of the globus-gridftp-server-6.5-4.el5 (more
details at http://bit.ly/globus_6_5_4) the issues of the DPM-DSI and
StoRM-GridFTP-Server are solved.
The workaround applied is no more needed so the previous versions of
Globus, 5.0.3/5.0.4, are no longer present in the EMI 1 third-party
repository.
After updating the DPM-DSI and StoRM-GridFTP-Server it is recommended to
restart the services. Also the gridftp server instances need to be
restarted using the following commands:

* EMI Disk Pool Manager (DPM)
# /etc/init.d/dpm-gsiftp restart

* StoRM-GridFTP-Server
# service storm-globus-gridftp restart

Please remember that: WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND NOT TO USE AUTOMATIC UPDATE
PROCEDURE OF ANY KIND on the EMI middleware repositories and EPEL (you
can keep it turned on for the OS). You should read the update

EMI and IGE both supply distributed computing technologies in Europe in order to provide European researchers with a pan-European computing infrastructure built from federated distributed resources and access to desktop grids. These projects support, maintain and develop middleware, and explore the application of cloud computing to grid infrastructures and scientific research. In particular, Globus, a grid middleware example, is a set of tools for constructing a grid, covering security measures, resource location and management, communications and so on. Many major grid projects use Globus, which is being developed by the Globus Alliance, a group involving Ian Foster's team at Argonne National Laboratory and Carl Kesselman's team at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In Europe, IGE is driving forward Globus developments according to European user requirements in close collaboration with the European Grid Initiative (EGI), Distributed Computing Infrastructure (DCI) projects, and Standard Development Organizations (SDOs).

The specific goals of the new EMI/IGE Collaboration defined by the MoU are to:

	1) ensure the provision of dedicated support from Globus developers and maintainers,
2) ensure EMI internal plans are known to IGE for IGE's planning purposes,
3) deliver interoperable EMI and IGE solutions,
4) provide Globus and EMI platform requirements respectively through IGE and EMI releases.

Thanks to this MoU, user will be able to use a common infrastructure, benefitting from the computing edge technologies provided by both these Initiatives. So, just as the very old but true saying: "together we stand, divided we fall"…

OGF is an open standard community that drives the rapid evolution and adoption of open standards in distributed computing. OGF carries out its work mainly through established 'working and community groups' that build the community, explore trends, share best practices and consolidate them into standards. EMI is fully committed in this process, not only through adopting, maintaining and developing products compliant with OGF standards, but by actively contributing to or chairing numerous groups that gather at events like OGF32. OGF32 will be held from July 15th to 18th at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. EMI's contribution to OGF32 will range from the more technical aspects, participating to the standardization groups like for information schema (GLUE), usage records (UR), grid storage (GSM) and job description language (JSDL), to the chairing of high profile groups like GIN (Grid Interoperation Now) and PGI (Production Grid Infrastructure). Significantly, the OGF32 Standardization session will be chaired by an EMI project member. More info can be obtained at the conference web site. Finally, there will be also one dedicated EMI session to inform the community about the EMI standardization progress and plans.

The Distributed Computing Infrastructure projects in Europe aim to provide
European researchers with a pan-European computing infrastructure built
from federated distributed resources and also access to desktop grids. The
projects support, maintain and develop middleware, and explore the
application of cloud computing to grid infrastructures and scientific
research.

The summer school will give insights into the distributed computing
technologies provided by the European Middleware Initiative, the
Initiative for Globus in Europe, the European Desktop Grid Initiative and
StratusLab. Based on the experience of DEGISCO and the European Grid
Infrastructure, the school will also address organization, application
porting, and user support in production infrastructures based on these
technologies.

The DCI projects are part-funded under the e-Infrastructures topic of the
EU FP7 "Capacities" theme.
