MeDIA launch event

Open, lightweight collaboration on distributed middleware technology

To facilitate the development and evolution of middleware solutions beyond the current short-term project limits, EMI is presenting an initiative for a long-term, open, lightweight collaboration on the coordination of distributed middleware technologies: the MiddlEware Development and Innovation Alliance (MEDIA).

A launch event for this initiative will take place in Rome, on April 22nd, 2013. This workshop will summarize three years of work and achievements of the EMI project and kick-start the activity of the MEDIA initiative. It will include a description of the motivations and the proposed mandate, scope activities and a public discussion on how to implement the activities and on the most immediate tasks to be performed. For further details, please see the draft proposal.

The expected participation is from team leaders and members of middleware development teams, user communities technical experts, infrastructure providers, application developers, commercial companies interested to hear about future coordination plans of middleware providers and provide feedback and requirements to the initiative.

ScienceSoft becomes SciencePAD

Since its launch, ScienceSoft and its ideas triggered several discussions with people from many projects, Institutes and research labs. As the discussion progressed, it emerged clearly the potential of formalizing the information on software products and services and linking it to emerging service platforms, specialized applications and the growing amount of scientific data being produced in many research areas.

A very promising collaboration on software registries is now started, involving CERN, one of the world's largest research centers in high-energy physics, EMBL, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and its EBI branch, the European Bioinformatics Institute, and ILL, the Institute Laue-Langevin, at the forefront of research in neutron science and technology as well as two companies leaders in consulting on the use of open source software, Olliance Group, the consulting division of Black Duck , and Ex Machina, one of their European representatives.

The new ideas have been included explicitly in the name of the initiative to stress even more the extended focus on the links among Platforms, Applications and Data, or PAD, as they have been started calling..

Today ScienceSoft becomes SciencePAD. We invite you to join us and follow us in this endeavour and contribute to the establishment of a new way of supporting excellence in scientific research.

1st dCache Workshop in the Asian Pacific Region

We are excited to announce the first dCache workshop in the Asian Pacific region.

The event will take place in Taipei, Sunday March 17, and is co-located with the prestigious

International Symposium on Grids and Clouds.

The workshop will include an installation tutorial, master classes on dCache internals, presentations on future plans and plenty of opportunities to meet the experts. Participants will receive practical hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge. These presentations and practical sessions will be run by core developers, dCache support people and experienced system administrators, giving participants access to first hand knowledge of the theory and practice of running a dCache cluster.

We are keen to meet the brave and the interested, and are looking forward to a fun workshop.

EMI 1 - End of Standard Updates and Beginning of Security Updates and Support

According to the EMI maintenance and support schedule, the period of Standard Updates for EMI 1 products ends on October 31st, 2012. As of November 1st EMI 1 products have entered the Security Updates support period, in which only updates targeting security vulnerabilities are provided, but no other fixes or functional improvements. This period will last until April 30th, 2013 after which the EMI 1 components will not be supported anymore.

On May 21st, 2012 the EMI project announced the availability of its second major release, EMI 2 (Matterhorn) providing new features and enhancements for many middleware components from ARC, dCache, gLite and UNICORE, including important new services not available in EMI 1. EMI 2 products are fully supported until April 30th, 2013 after which date they will enter the Standard support period.

In specific cases, extensions of the support periods for individual products can be provided by the EMI Product Teams upon negotiation of the terms with the user communities.

We recommend to migrate to EMI 2 versions of the services at your earliest convenience.
