As the discussion progressed, it emerged clearly the potential of formalizing the information on software products and services and linking it to emerging service platforms, specialized applications and the growing amount of scientific data being produced in many research areas.

A very promising collaboration on software registries is now started, involving CERN, one of the world's largest research centers in high-energy physics, EMBL, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and its EBI branch, the European Bioinformatics Institute, and ILL, the Institute Laue-Langevin, at the forefront of research in neutron science and technology as well as two companies leaders in consulting on the use of open source software, Olliance Group, the consulting division of Black Duck , and Ex Machina, one of their European representatives.

The new ideas have been included explicitly in the name of the initiative to stress even more the extended focus on the links among Platforms, Applications and Data, or PAD, as they have been started calling..

Today ScienceSoft becomes SciencePAD. We invite you to join us and follow us in this endeavour and contribute to the establishment of a new way of supporting excellence in scientific research.

Check out the web site http://sciencepad.org for more info.
